Lets Dress up those Envelopes

Hi everyone!  Its Tuesday and its Katie here hoping you are having a great week and a great Tuesday so far.  Today, I wanted to show you how you can dress up some envelopes that are easy to get a hold of, but will fit some different sized cards.  I saw this idea a while ago from a fellow stamper friend (Kim) and she was kind enough to share it with me.

Generally, many of us tend to keep stock of the standard A2 (4 1/4" x 5 1/2') envelope and its pretty easy to find 5"x7" envelopes and its super easy to find small business envelopes, but what if you wanted to make a few 3"x3", 4"x4", or even 5"x5" envelopes?  Today I'll show you how.

Essentially all you need is any envelope you can find, some scrap designer paper which will probably come from leftovers from the card you were making and really that's about it.  You will not only get an envelope that fits your card, but you'll also get one that matches your card perfectly without a lot of fuss or muss!

I also wanted to mention that the first couple of cards and envelopes that I created are from a brand new Scrapbooking Line called Nikki Sivils Scrapbooker.  I mean BRAND NEW as in this is Nikki's very first line of scrapbooking paper.  If you like what you see, you can purchase it right from the store.

I won't go into a lot of detail about my cards, since its really the envelopes that I am focusing on.  Again... super easy.  This first card and envelope were made with the  My Sweet Cherry Pie line and I paired it with one of my favorite stamps (the cherry of course) from the newly released set called Tangy Trio.

I decided to make a 4x4 card and in order to make an envelope to fit it, I took the A2 standard envelope and licked it closed.  Then I took and cut off one edge of it.  Actually measure you envelope so you can make it square for the most part.  This particular envelope that I used measured approximately 4 3/8".

This is what your envelope will look like.

Then you'll want to get a circle punch of your choice.  The only criteria is that it will have to fit into the envelope slot in order to punch.

Now, you'll want to cut a piece of designer paper 4 3/8" x 3"

Score along the 3" side at 1", just one one side.

Now, its just a matter of folding and adhering the 1" side to the front of your cut envelope.  As you can see from my photo, I added another piece of cardstock to the end.  Your options are really limitless as to how you want to customize your own envelopes.

Here is a photo of the new envelope and card that I made.  I made a 4" square card, but you could easily make a 4 1/4" square card instead.

Let's say you wanted to make a 5"x5" card and matching envelope.  Again, exact same steps as previously, except that you start with an envelope that fits a 5" x 7" card.  Remember, your envelope will be slightly bigger so make sure to measure the shorter side to get an accurate cut.

And your designer paper would measure something like 5 1/4" x 3".  Here is my example of card and envelope front.  For this card, I used another Nikki Sivils line called  Henry's Brilliance.  These papers come in 12x12 or the 6" pads.  For today's purposes, I used the 6x6 pads.

I'm so excited, because I have my oldest son's back to school card all ready.  I haven't figured out what I'm going to give along with it, but I love how it turned out.  I paired it with a stamp from this month's (JULY) stamp of the month that would normally get FREE with a $50 purchase, but you can get FREE with only a $35 purchase.  Its called Tag It and I love this little set and you will get lots of use out of it.  This is the only way you can get it and once July is over... say bye, bye.

Here are a couple of close ups for you.  I used the Quickie Glue pen to add a bit of fuzz to the owls' bellies.  Love this pen too!

And a close up of the tag stamp.  This one works perfectly with the cuttlebug die set called Sliders.

And finally, one last envelope to show you.  For this card, I cut a 3"x3" card and created an envelope for it by altering a small standard business envelope.  Lots of room to spare, so you can really layer it or make a slightly larger card for it.  The photo has the altered envelope as well as the original envelope.  I used scraps from my Basic Grey Urban Prairie.

And a sneak peek.  Look at that little crocheted flower.  It will soon be available in the store and is the perfect little layering piece.

These envelopes are super easy to customize and really add to the whole ensemble.  I did examples of square cards, but you really don't have too.  Your card could be any odd dimension as long as it will fit into your "new" envelope.  Imagine creating an envelope that would fit a 4x7 card by altering a legal sized envelope.  Again, limitless options.

Let's Watercolor, but without the Brushes

Hi everyone.  Its Katie here and I'd like to welcome you to another fabulous Friday!  Where is the time going? And where is my summer?? The Pacific Northwest has been chilly and wet of late.  And talking about water....I've got a technique to share with you that I love.  If you'd like the look of watercolor without all the painting here you go :)

This is a simple technique and this is all you need:

• A mini mister
• Tombow Markers
• Ink Pad
• Stamps
• Designer Paper
• Cardstock

One of the best things I like about this technique is that you don't have to be so picky and precise.  I started out with a little Tulip Stamp that can be yours on your next shopping visit for only $1.00.  I also used 2 Tombow Markers... Lori has these available in both color sets and individually.

Just color up your sections of your stamp.  Remember that with your lighter inks and markers, it will barely show on your stamp, but its there.

Now you take a mini spritzer... which by the way are awesome to have on hand.  They spray very nicely and don't take up much space at all.  You get 3 in a package too.  Its good to play around and test your image with different amounts of water sprayed onto your stamp.

Then its just a matter of stamping you your cardstock.  Even though you are using water, you don't need watercolor paper.  All you need is regular carstock and you'll be fine.  Your image will also puff up your paper just a tad (not wrinkle) and actually leave a neat texture to the touch.

You've got a couple of choices here.

• Color, Spritz, Stamp --- repeat this cycle
• Color, Spritz, Stamp, Spritz again, and then Stamp ---repeat the cycle

All depends on the look you like.

Here's my card where I used my strip of "watercolor" stamped tulips.  I paired it with the paper from the Basic Grey (6x6) Porcelain Collection.  This paper has lots of designs that totally play off the watercolor look.  And another note here... Lori just added 12x12 packs of Basic Grey paper at the store... I find that the 12x12 is just as usable for cards as it is for scrapbooking.

The ribbon you can find HERE and the sentiment is from a set called Formal Sentiments.

Here is a sample of of some background paper that I created using Soil of Prayer.  Even though this stamp is much larger its still super easy and fast to color.  I colored the entire image with the pink marker and then just dabbed the areas with the green marker. 

 

Close up:

I have one more simple technique that you can use with your ink pad.  The only difference is that you ink up your stamp like normal on the ink pad *** the only limitation with this is that you are really limited to one color *** which is why the markers are nice to have.  Then just spritz with water.  The more water you have on the stamp the more "watered" and less defined your image will be. 

 

 

Here's a side by side example of a plain stamped image and a "watercolor" stamped image.

 

And here is a card that I made using this image.  Do you recognize the background?  Its one of the examples I made for Tuesday's tutorial... yeah love the fact that I could use it so quickly.  I did use a waterbrush and my ink from my pad and splattered onto my image.

I used a circle nestability and the small inverted circle nestability, Old Wagon Stamp Set, a small hole punch, jute string, double ended tags, and some eyelets.

Hi everyone!  First I (Katie) want to say thanks for leaving all those informative comments.  I loved reading about all the favorites and have added some new items to my list of "try outs" and I'm sure all you readers out there were introduced to some new items too.

I did want to mention a couple of items that Lori does have at the store that can work as adhesives that I totally forgot to mention.

The first item being the huge variety of STICKLES that you can find.  These work great as a glue especially for clear embellishments.  That way you get the stick, but you can also see the glitter too and of course if its handy use it for those embellishments... it is a glue :)

The other item that Lori has is the CRYSTAL LACQUER GLAZE by Sakura.  A couple of you mentioned using that or something similar as an adhesive too.

Thanks for the information.I love using the quickie glue pen, it's great to use on very small things and it holds glitter very well.I also like to using my ATG gun and Zig two way glue.I've never tried the Zip Dry Paper Glue or the Scor-Tape, I'll have to look for them the next time I'm out shopping.

Its WAX time... the fun kind!

Good morning stampers and crafters!  Its Tuesday once again and its Katie here to welcome you to anther day at Clearly iStamp.  So does my post  heading have you stumped yet??  I'm sure yes for some and no for others :)

Well, guess what??  I'm going to share a a wax technique that I have heard, seen, and read about but have never attempted  until now.  Imagine... all new to me and wow it sure is fun!  Just another great way to add some "spice" to your cardmaking or scrapbooking.  I love techniques like this one because its so "magical"

So like I said earlier, I haven't ever tried this technique before and thought I would share my experience with you.  It was super fun and super easy!  I didn't have wax paper of my own, so I'd like to thank my very good neighbor for letting me borrow hers!

Ingredients:

• Cuttlebug
• Embossing Folder
• Wax Paper
• Brayer
• Iron
• Dye ink
• Stamps
• Glossy Cardstock

So the first thing you need to do is get your wax paper.  I just used scissors to cut approximate sizes.  All my sheets were larger than my embossing folder and then I just trimmed the edges.

 

Here is my cuttlebug sandwich building from the bottom up:

• Plate A
• Plate B
• Embossing Folder with wax paper
• Plate B

Here is the wax paper after being run through.  At this point you can just trim up the edges - no need to be precise.

This is where your glossy cardstock comes into play and you will need another sandwich:

• Glossy cardstock (cut to 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" or preferred card size) glossy side UP
• Embossed Wax paper EMBOSSED SIDE DOWN
• Scratch paper on top

Now time for your iron - HOT WITH NO STEAM

It does take a little bit of time to get all the wax transferred so be patient.  You can also lift up your layers and peek and see how much has been transferred, just be careful to not move it too much.

Here you can see how the glossy cardstock looks with the wax transferred.

Now its time for the brayer.  I am definitely no brayer expert so I like these types of brayering... easy color lay on.

Now that the entire piece has been inked you can really see where the wax transferred differently onto your cardstock.  I did several of them and they all turned out slightly different.

Now, just take a tissue, napkin, or paper towel and wipe off the excess ink. 

Now its all ready to trim and use to create your card or project.  Here I paired up my background with the stamp set called Pretty Perches and the sentiment was created by combining a word from these two sets, Card Categories and Card Categories Too.  I literally kept this card to two colors and I think it turned out great.  If you love that ribbon, which by the way I do... you can find it HERE.  All the satin grosgrain edge ribbon is just so luxurious to work with.

In the picture below, you can see two more examples of the same technique and the same embossing folder but with different inks.

I did want to make a note here... do you notice that the birds are facing different directions on the 2 backgrounds? That is what will happen if you place your embossed (raised side) wax paper facing up versus down against the glossy paper.  No big deal here, but it will make a difference if you use an embossing folder with words or numbers.

And one more note.  The piece on the right was brayered with 4 different colors of ink.  I just inked up the right 1/2 of the brayer and moved to the left after each color change.  The blend is so easy and I didn't have to worry about getting any of the colors mixed.  Remember, you are talking about the novice brayer here.

And finally, I wanted to show you a nice close up of a different embossing folder.  I used a couple of different inks on this one with no rhyme or reason.  I also think this photo does a good job of showing how neat the glossy cardstock looks.

Its the sticky things that count and Blog Candy at the end!

Happy Friday and almost Happy 4th!  Its Katie here today and I'm going to go over some of the different types of adhesives that are available here at Clear Dollar Stamps.  Lori offers a nice variety of adhesives at the store and in my opinion, they are all a must have in your arsenal of stickiness.

Lets start with a personal favorite of mine and let me tell you that this particular item is new to me within the last couple of months.  Can you believe it???  I had other types of glue pens, but this one is by far the best ever and I will never be without it!  I'm talking about the Quickie Glue Pen.  This is a great item if you enjoy paper piecing, adhering small letters, gemstones, embellishments, or lots of glitter and even fun flock. 

For the nominal price of $2.50 this little guy pulls no punches.  Here is an example of how I used it to add different colored glitter to a stamp. 

Stamp first, then use the pen to fill in the areas you want showing the same colored glitter.  Tap excess and the work on your next section.  You'll have plenty of control to fill in all the tiny nooks and crannies.

For my sample I used two stamp sets: Butterfly Wings (sentiment) and Beautiful Butterflies.

My next glue is another type of liquid glue and is called Zip Dry.  It specifically states on the package that it is made for paper.  It won't make your paper buckle and it has great hold.

The lid also contains a funneled tip that allows for very good control and precision when you are applying the glue.  It dries clear so if you do spill over the edge, your project isn't ruined.  With that said though, you do have to be aware that when you lay you paper/cardstock down, the glue will squish, just like plain old Elmer's glue.  Its really about the same viscosity too.  Its not even as close to as liquid as the Quickie Glue Pen.

I actually use the Zip Dry to finish off corners or edges of paper that I didn't quite get down.  It super easy to just dab a tiny bit and press.

I don't have an example for this, because it is pretty cut and dried.  Just know that it adheres well and I haven't had any issues of clogging (make sure to put your lid back on though)

Now, if you don't have an ATG gun, you can still use ATG refill tape just like you you would use red liner tape or scor tape, but clearly it works best with the gun.  I was super happy to see that Lori started carrying the tape at the store.  If you have an ATG gun, then you know the joys of using the dispenser and the tape.  It has great bonding power and is easy to apply.  The option to just throw one or just a handful of tape into your cart versus purchasing them in bulk is nice for many of us.  The width that is available at the store is 1/4" wide.

My next adhesive is the Scor-tape.  I have to tell you that I love this stuff.  Before the Scor-tape, I used to use red liner tape which had excellent hold, but oh my gosh, the static from the wrapper was absolutely horrible.

The Scor-tap has excellent stick, comes in a variety of widths.  Lori offers both the 1/8" and the 1/4" widths at the store.  And did you know that it also actually tears?  Yup, if you aren't worried about perfectly severed edges, just rip and go.  Its amazing. 

If I need lots of hold, especially on 3-D items, I will use the Scor-tape.  I also use it on areas that I need tape on, but can't lay adhesive on with the dispenser. Unroll the necessary length, stick, peel, and go.

Another great way to use the score tape is to adhere glitter to it.  This is what I did with the card below.  I had some pretty cardstock from Kaisercraft and decided to jazz it up just a tad.  I created strips the desired width of my card and I used both the 1/8" and the 1/4".  I decided to hang it over just a tad and then trim after wards.

Remove the tape cover and then generously pour your glitter over our cardstock.

Here is the finished card.  See the strips of glitter on the background.  I sort of cheated since I used striped paper and it was easy to keep things aligned ;)  You can use it to add fluff, microbeads, etc.

 And finally, how about a glue pad?  Like an ink pad, but glue instead.  Introducing  Palette Stamp and Stick Gluepad. Lori also carries the reinker for this as well.

Ok, here's the scoop for me, which means this is what happened when I was working with this glue pad, which also means that it might be different for you or anybody else.

According to what I read, you are supposed to use this glue pad with glossy cardstock or some sort of coated paper.  I used it on both the glossy and what I consider regular (cardmaking) cardstock and essentially got the same results.

Step 1 is to stamp your image and then use a heat gun to activate.   It will appear to dry, but the glitter will stick.  If you rub your finger on the glittered image, glitter will slough off, but not all of it unless you really, really rub it.  This is probably one of those times you could use a sealant (don't know because I've never used a spray over any of my things.)

Anyway, here is what I did and the end result.

  

 

I also made an example to show you what using the glue pad and chalk looks like.  It really gave my piece a very smooth look when it was all said and done.  I chalked and then took a tissue and cleaned up all the extra chalk.

So that is my run down on some adhesives.  They are all different and all important and I wouldn't give up any of them.

Picnic Caddy Tutorial - March of the Ants

Hi friends... Its Katie here today after a little break :)  I hope you enjoyed all those great sneak peeks - Wowee, lots of fabulous new stamps to choose from. 

     As you know... we are in prime picnic time and that is the theme that I went with while creating this caddy for you.  I love how this turned out and I have to be honest with you and say that this one little tiny ant stamp ( only $1.00 ) made the whole project.  BUT, there is a lot of potential with this one.  I love the fact that this is "real" and totally usable for just about any occasion and just depends on the theme you want to use it for.

So here we go!

Adhesive
Scissors
Paper Cutter
SU Punch
Ink
Clear Dollar Ant stamp
Copic Marker
Cardstock
Ruler
Scor-pal
Scor-tape
Corner Rounder

Start with a 12x12 piece of cardstock and score all sides at 3 1/2"

Fold up into your basic box.

Now its time for the fun part.  I didn't have any "picnic" table cloth looking cardstock so I created my own.  I grabbed a copic marker that matched up to the red cardstock I was using and got out my very neglected quilting ruler.  I liked this ruler because it is clear and will give you perfectly straight lines.  I have a smaller one somewhere but couldn't find it, so I used my larger version.

Trick is to start in the middle or so and line up the edge of your cardstock to one of the lines of your ruler.

Use the chisel end of your Copic Marker, narrow side down to create a thinner line and then turn to create a thicker line.  Just keep moving your ruler your chosen amount of distance.  I moved mine over 1" at a time.

You don't have to have the perfect distance every time as you can see from my sample.  I created a 12x12 sheet, but you could do smaller pieces individually if you wished.

Now, its just a matter of cutting all your sides and mats.

4 Black (base) - 4 3/4" x 3 1/4"
4 Red (middle) - 4 5/8" x 3 1/8"
4 Plaid (top) - 4 1/2" x 3"

Then I took that little ant stamp and stamped them in a "marching" line formation.  Make sure to number your pieces of cardstock  so you know what order you want to put them on your caddy.  This is to assure that your "line" of ants stay in line.

 

Then adhere all your pieces together.  Again, remember to transfer your numbers to each completed section.

 

Now adhere to the sides of your box.

 

Now for your handle.

Cut 2 pieces of cardstock measuring 5" x 8 1/2".

Score both pieces in at 2 1/2" along the 5" side.

 

Now this is the way I created a mark to guide my punch for the handle.  I used my Scor-pal grooves to create scores and center my mark so I would then have a guide to my punch.  You could do the same with a ruler and pencil, but since I had the scor-pal out anyway... I used the 1/2" mark on the scor-pal and went 1/2 way down.  You don't have to be precise here.

I then turned so that the top of the handle is upright.  This is where you create the exact center intersection point.

 

Now, I have my guide.

 

Once one piece was punched, I just layered that piece of my second piece and punched again.  Remember to use your corner rounder at this time just at your handle corners.  I then placed both pieces together and glued them leaving the "feet" flaps open.

Next, you will apply adhesive to your "feet" ***Remember to do a dry fit though since there is always a little bit of difference between cardstocks***

Then just insert and press down firmly.

 

Now time for the inserts.  You will need 2 pieces of cardstock measuring 3 7/16" x 7 1/2"

Score along the left and right (long sides)  1/2" in.

Along the shorter side, score at 1/2", 3 1/2", 4" and 7"

 

Fold and cut away all small square flaps AND apply adhesive only on HALF of the flaps (as shown in picture below)

Fold over and press. 

 

Cut 2 small strips of your picnic cloth paper measuring 2" x 1/2" and stamp your ants.  Adhere to the top of the 2 boxes.

 

Wrap some Scor-tape along the sides and bottom of your inserts and position where you would like them.

 

 

And there you go!  Final measurements for your picnic caddy are 5" deep, 5" wide, and 3 1/2" tall.  This is seriously a generous size and it may be hard to tell from the picture, but there is plenty of room for more plasticware in each compartment.  Its very sturdy since I layered the cardstock on the sides.
